Abstract

1,229,646. Coated paper. A. E. STALEY MFG. CO. 20 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 55037/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Paper is coated with a binder composition comprising an anionic starch and from 0.3- 20 wt % based on the starch of a polyalkylenimine, together with an inorganic pigment filler and optionally 0.01-5 pts by wt of a synthetic latex. The starch may be oxidized and contain at least 0.5% COOH groups. The composition may be insolubilized with a starch insolubilizing agent. Exemplified components are: starches; hypochlorite oxidized, quaternary ammonium/COOH containing and a propane sultone derivative of acid modified corn starch: pigments; a clay slip: synthetic latices; styrene-butadiene, ethylene-vinyl acetate or PV acetate: insolubilizing agents; melamine- or urea-formaldehyde resin, glyoxal, glutaraldehyde and dialdehyde starch. Other components are NH 4 NO 3 and Na polyhexametaphosphate.
