Abstract

Saddles.-Cycle and like saddle tops, of the kind produced by moulding, shaping, and vulcanizing composite material consisting of one or more canvas or other fabric layers covered or faced with rubber, have the fabric layers produced from strips or ribbands of webbing, canvas, or the like. The layer may be constructed as an outside or frame portion which is formed by one or more lengths of the strip material, and is wholly or partly filled up by the application of other strips. These additional strips may be arranged longitudinally and transversely, and be interlaced. In Fig. 6, which shows the underside of a built-up fabric layer, the frame consists of a strip c slit at a so that it can be manipulated into triangular shape with the ends arranged to overlap at the peak. Oblique lengths b, a central length d, and transverse lengths e, f are superimposed upon the frame. Reinforcing or strengthening members may be applied to the layer, and, prior to the application of the rubber, the built-up layer may be consolidated by pressure in dies or moulds.
