Abstract

744,907. Belt gearing. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE AKT.-GES. March 9, 1953 [March 10, 1952; May 19, 1952; Dec. 2, 1952], No. 6464/53. Class 80(1) [Also in Group V] Reinforcing inserts are placed in a mould, fused thermoplastic material is poured into the mould, the material is allowed to solidfy, and the resultant reinforced belting is removed from the mould. The material may be polyamide or polyurethane. Fig. 1 shows a ring-shaped mould 4 enclosing a mandrel 1 on which is placed first coarse-meshed fabric 2 and then fibrous organic or inorganic reinforcement 3. The fabric 2, which may be omitted, spaces the reinforcement from the mandrel. The belting may be cut into widths, or it may be cast as one belt width. Fig. 2 shows the base 5 of another mould, the mould sides not being shown. The reinforcement is placed on or, as shown, stretched above the base and covered with the material 6a: if a dovetail-shaped groove is cut in the base 5 and reinforcement laid in the groove, V-belting may be made. In a modification of Fig. 2 (Fig. 3, not shown) several layers of fabric reinforcement are cemented together, fused thermoplastic material is poured over them and allowed to harden, and a friction layer of leather &c. is cemented to the uppermost layer. Toothed belting may be made in a mould 9, 10, Fig. 4, having pins 11 on which steel wire reinforcements 3 are wound. The pins may be removed after moulding, or allowed to stay in the belting. The teeth may be formed on both sides and the teeth on one side may be staggered in relation to the teeth on the other side. Fig. 10 shows a belt B mounted around a tube m and having reinforcements 6. A spacer bolt n extends through the tube and has clamping jaws o which carry wedge-shaped members p that engage the lateral surfaces of V-pulleys.
