Description

C. l. E. MASTIN.
PACKING.
APPLICATION man SEPT. 2. 191a.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916 YORK; N. Y.
PACKING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES I. E. Masrm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midland Park, in the county of Bergen and State of l ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to packings, and has for an object to provide a packing emnew and improved features of strength, elasticity and wearing qualities.
further object of the invention is to reinforce. each provided with a live rubber core.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
11 the drawings :Figure 1 is a view of the packing in side elevation, the parts being broken away to show the built-up struc- Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the metal reinforce. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through one of the rolls.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved packing which forms the subject-matter of this application comprises a metal reinforce 10 formed in the general construction of an I-beam, having cut-out portions 11 which permit the reinforce to be Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 2, 1916. Serial No.
Patented Dec. 112, 1%16. 118,236.
curved to correspond to the required curvature of the packing as shown particularly at Fig. 1. Two rolls of material are made as shown in the enlarged view at Fig. 4, comprising each a live rubber core 12 with rubberized fabric rolled around such core in the usual well-known manner for vulcanizing purposes. The two rolls are placed upon opposite sides of the reinforce 10 intermediate its two flanges. A plurality of strips of rubberized. fabric 13 and 14 are now placed on the outer periphery of the associated rolls and reinforce, and a final outer fabric 15 placed upon the periphery of the two fabrics 13 and 14 and brought down along the sides of the rolls. The entire structure is now by some approved means pressed and molded into the form shown at Fig. 2, in cross section substantially rectanwith the inner periphery of the metal gular, reinforce flush with the inner surface of the The entire structure 1s completed packing. now Vulcanized in the usual well-known manner, and the packing is complete.
I claim 1. In a packing, a metal reinforce, rolls located upon opposite sides of the reinforce, and each comprising a rubber core and fabric laminations, and fabrics spanning over and joining the rolls together.
2. A packing comprising a metal reinforce of substantially I-beam form having cut-out portions upon one side forming the inner surface of the packing, rolls located upon opposite sides of the metal reinforce c0mrubber cores and laminations of ning the cores, canized connecting the rolls through the cutout portions of the metal reinforce.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
