Abstract
1,229,111. Display systems. SINA A.G. 3 June, 1969 [4 June, 1968], No. 28098/69. Heading G4H. A number of numerical values, each related to a different measured quantity, are displayed each in a separate column of lamps, Fig. 1, a lamp being lit to show the deviation of the measured quantity from a predetermined desired value. The apparatus may be applied to a paper mill and indicate the deviations of the thickness of the paper at a number of points from desired correct thickness. The measurements each in the form of a train of pulses, are applied successively to a binary counter A-K, Fig. 3, which has previously been loaded for each measurement with a number representing the desired value. The counter counts backwards so that at the end of the pulse train it may be at zero if the measurement is exactly correct, positive if the measurement is low or contain a negative number in complement form if the measurement is high. In the last case the passage of the counter from all zero to all ones is detected by gates 4 and 7 and a "desired value exceeded" flip-flop consisting of N And gates 9 and 10 is set to give high/low outputs from gates 13, 14. The indicator has eight lamps above zero and eight below. The least significant three digits of the counter are decoded to mark one of eight leads. In addition all the digits above the three least significant are gated at 11 and if any is "1" the tolerance of seven units is exceeded and a signal T is produced. The decoder outputs control the middle 15 lamps and the tolerance exceeded signal T control the top and bottom lamp. The high/ low signals fire one of two thyristors to connect power either to the upper eight lamps or to the zero lamp and the lower eight lamps. One of the nine inputs from the decoder and from gate 16 is marked to fire one of wire thyristors selecting one lamp in the selected group. The lamp remains slit until the same measurement is signalled in the next cycle. Each column of lamps is associated with one stage of a counter which is stepped once by each successive input pulse train to enable the corresponding column of lamps for a display. The deviation values may be printed as well as displayed. A divider may be inserted in the input to the counter to increase the tolerance level, for example by ten times. An alarm may be given by the "tolerance-exceeded" signal.
