1,229,094. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 19, 1969 [Oct. 1, 1968], No.46385/69. Heading G1A. An installation for atomic absorption spectrophotometry for the analysis of radio-active solutions, comprises a chamber 17 having a burner 1 and a device for spraying into the flame a solution containing an element to be determined said burner being supplied with combustion gases from cylinders 6 and 7. Light from a discharge tube 22 having a cathode formed of the same element is shone through windows 21 and the flame into a spectrometer 24 for measurement of the atomic absorption. The gases and vapours produced are removed by duct 28 having a high power extractor fan 30 such that the gases and vapours are passed through a bubbling column 31 containing dilute sulphuric acid and fitted with Raschig rings, through cooling coil 36 and two filters 38 and 39 into a second column 42 for bubbling through sodium hydroxide and thence via extractor fan 30 and duct extremity 29 into the atmosphere. Further cooling of the gases is effected by a stream of air, circulated through the vacuum tight chambers 17 towards duct 28 and from a closure member having an elastic sleeve 44, placed in the chamber wall so as to open under the action of the reduced pressure produced by extractor fan 30. The radioactive wastes produced can be removed by means of extractor valve 35. Safety devices are included for monitoring the flame and measuring the rate of flow and temperature of the gases.
