Abstract
1387408 Testing filters UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 31 Oct 1972 [3 Nov 1971] 51214/71 Heading BIT [Also in Division Gl] In a method and apparatus for testing filters a gas stream flowing through filter 1 entrains condensation nuclei generated by combustion of a solution of (e.g. ammonium sulphide) in a flammable solvent (e.g. methylated spirit) in burner 4, and the concentration of the nuclei in the gas upstream and downstream of the filter is measured by the use of Pollak counter 6. In the Pollak counter which receives separate samples from upstream and downstream of the filter, water vapour is condensed on the nuclei and concentration of the nuclei is determined optically by light transmission from light source 9 to photoelectric cell 10 associated with voltmeter 11. The Pollak counter to which gas enters at 5 comprises a metal tube with a porous lining 7, transparent plates 8, water supply 12 vacuum pump 19, pressure pump 14 and filter 15, pressure gauge 16 and valved vent pipe 17.
