Abstract

1,228,914. Heating of foodstuffs by passage of current. ANSTALT EURORESEARCH. 6 May, 1968 [11 Sept., 1967; 19 Oct., 1967], No. 21330/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division A4] In cooking apparatus of the type in which the two ends 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, of an article such as a sausage 8 are inserted in electrolyte baths 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, and current is passed through the article 8 to heat it the lid 3 of the cooking container 2 cannot be opened while current is being passed. The invention is applicable also to the heating of strongly salted liquids, such as soup. Lid 3 is held closed when energization of an electromagnet 14, upon current flow, moves on abutment 13 to block upward movement of a lever 12 secured to the lid. A thermal sensor 11 interrupts the current flow when the food temperature reaches a certain value, thereby de-energizing the electromagnet 14 and allowing opening of lid 3. A push button 15 allows manual actuation and an indicator lamp 16 is provided. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, rotation of the knob of a time switch 104 from its zero position locks the lid 112 in a closed position by engagement of a disc 125, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), in a groove 124 of lid extension 122. Spring biased current supply connections 116, 117, Fig. 5 (not shown), engage the electrodes 101, 102, embedded in the base of the cooking container 110. A currentlimiting series resistor is provided, and provides extra heating.
