Abstract

1,228,897. Papermaking. ALLIS-CHALMERS MFG. CO. 26 Sept., 1968 [28 Sept., 1967], No. 45704/68. Heading D2A. Paper is made by combining, wire side to wire side, two wet webs formed on the moving wires of two web-forming units, each wire being constrained to move in a path which, in the web-forming portion of its travel, is straight and elongated, the webs being couched and brought into contact, wire side to wire side, by pressing between rolls. One of the webcombining rolls, which define a nip, may be a suction roll whose suction means overlaps the nip and extends circumferentially beyond it, to draw the web this way. The other roll may be a suction roll with its suction means terminating at the nip. Each web-combining roll may be inside a felt loop which also loops a pickup roll, acting on one of the web-forming units. The web-combining rolls may be disposed between and above the pickup rolls, the web-forming units sloping upwardly in the direction of paper formation. The web-forming units may have suction boxes beneath the straight elongated portion of travel of the wire which are movable in the direction of paper formation by means of adjusting screws.
