Abstract
1,228,611. Collapsible steering columns. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. 3 July, 1968 [5 July, 1967], No. 31704/68. Heading B7H. A safety steering arrangement in a motor vehicle comprises a divided steering shaft 2 disposed in an enclosing tube 1, which is provided with a deformable element 5, the adjacent parts 2, 2<SP>1</SP> of the divided steering shaft having surfaces inclined to the shaft axis and being connected together by a connection which releases and permits mutual sliding of the parts when overloaded. The deformable element is preferably at the dashboard end of the tube 1 and may comprise a tube 5<SP>1</SP> with an annular rib 8 and perforations 9 protected against dust by a sleeve 10 (Fig. 1a) or a part-conical element 5<SP>11</SP> with slots 11 (Fig. 1b) The adjacent ends of the steering shaft parts may be cut obliquely at their ends and held together by one or two frangible sleeves 13 which may be shrunk, clamped, adhesively bonded or screwed in place (Figs. 1a, 1b) or may have bent ends 14 which are clamped parallel to one another by a clamp 15 (Fig. 2).
