Abstract

1,164,146. Collapsible steering shafts. R. BUGBEE, [trading as B. & S. PRECISION TOOL CO.]. 10 Nov., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966], No. 50663/66. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In order to absorb energy when a shaft moves axially within a tube, a series of balls are located in one or more grooves in the shaft and provide an interference fit within the tube. Alternatively the groove or grooves may be formed in the tube or the balls may be located in pockets. The shaft and tube may be of corresponding cross section which may be circular, square or rectangular or may be keyed together by serrations or splines. In a motor vehicle steering arrangement, Fig. 2, balls 12 positioned in pockets and providing an interference fit are located in splines 16 between a shaft 10 to which is connected a steering wheel and tube 11 which is connected to the steering mechanism, the tube and shaft being located within a steering column 18.
