Abstract

1,223,551. Power-assisted steering. CAM GEARS Ltd. 28 Feb., 1968 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 57912/66. Heading B7H. [Also in Division G3] In an hydraulic steering unit in which a servovalve is mounted coaxially of an input shaft 10 which is connected to a steering-wheel and to the spindle 3 of a pinion 2 or other input gear, the input shaft 10 and spindle 3 are interconnected by follower means 8 engaging a track 11B in one member and riding in a helical track 7 in the other member whereby on relative rotation of the spindle 3 and input shaft 10 the follower moves axially thereby operating a servo valve spool 16 disposed coaxially of and surrounding the input shaft 10. As shown, the follower means comprise pegs 8 which are mounted in an extension sleeve 18 of the valve spool 16 and engage axially directed slots 11B in a member 11 secured to the input shaft 10. The neutral position of the valve is adjustable by screwing the sleeve 5 which mounts a thrust bearing 4 supporting the spindle 3, into or out of the steering gear housing 6.
