1449639 Gearing NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 15 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 48019/73 Heading F2Q A steering gear for a motor vehicle comprises a worm 1 which moves a nut 3 axially through a recirculating ball mechanism between grooves 1a and 3a of worm and nut, the nut having a sector rack with teeth 10a, 10b engaging teeth 5a of a sector gear 5 on a shaft 12 the teeth 10a, 10b and 5a being such that the steering ratio (angle of rotation of worm 3 to resultant angle of rotation of sector) is a maximum in the central position of the sector 5 shown and decreases away from this position. The sector 5 operates the steering of the vehicle wheels through the shaft 12 and further linkwork (not shown).
