Abstract

1301835 Stamping BRITISH ROPES Ltd 21 Jan 1970 [27 Jan 1969] 4486/69 Heading B3Q [Also in Division F2] A deformable tubular member (e.g. 1, Fig. 2) is placed over a rigid member 2 so as to overlay a peripheral groove 9 on the rigid member, the side walls of the groove 9 being perpendicular to the surface of the rigid member. An elastomeric ring 8 surrounding the tubular member 1 is then compressed axially by screwing up housing 4, 4a so as to cause it to expand radially inwardly to force part of the tubular member 1 into the groove 9. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), the tubular member 1 bridges two pipe ends, each pipe end being provided with a groove 9. Two elastomeric rings are used (one for each groove 9) and the housing for compressing the rings comprises a centrally apertured radial web having a cylindrical extension 5 on either side. The rings are pressed against the central web by screw-on rings 4a as shown in Fig. 2. A permanently deformable sleeve 11 (e.g. of copper) may be interposed between the elastomeric ring and the tubular member 1 so that the elastomeric ring and the housing 4, 4a may be subsequently removed (Fig. 4), the washers 7 in this case being semicircular to allow removal. Fig. 5 (not shown), shows the embodiment of Fig. 4 less housing and elastomeric ring. Fig. 1 (not shown), illustrates the use of a permanently deformable ring 11 in joining a tube 1 to a plug or stopper 2.
