A solution or dispersion containing formaldehyde as impurity is freed therefrom by treating it with (a) a simple hydride of a metal of main Groups I-III of the Periodic Table; (b) a complex boron or aluminium hydride; or (c) hydrazine or a mono alkyl or aryl hydrazine. An amino acid such as glycocoll or p-aminobenzoic acid may be added to the mixture. The purification of dimethylol urea, dimethylol thiourea and dimethylol ethylenethiourea is described.
