A labelling machine comprises a continuously driven conveyer 22 for transporting articles 21 to an intermittently operated conveyer 23 which conveys them to a weighing unit 26, 27 and thence to a labelling station 19; a label marking unit 12 operated by the weighing unit 26, 27 marks a label with information relating to the weight and price of the article, and a rotating head 30 at the labelling station advances the marked labels 32 in succession to a position 21g in synchronism with the progress of articles from the weighing unit and has radial arms 31 applying the appropriate label to the article thereat. The continuously running conveyer 22 has pegs 18 for moving the articles past an article detector unit 25, which initiates an operating step of the machine, towards the second conveyer 23 which moves the article at 21a to the weighing station 21b and thence stepwise to the labelling station. The article is weighed at 21b on a platform 26 linked by electro-mechanical means to a computing circuit which actuates a print out unit 12 to mark weight and weight-related information on a label drawn from a reel 13 for application to the article when it reaches position 21g. The head 30 has four radial arms 31 each carrying an electrically heated pad with vacuum passages for holding the thermo-adhesive labels by suction. The head is indexed through 90 degrees during each step in a clockwise direction as seen in Fig. 3. When the label printed by the unit 12 reaches point 32c it is cut from the strip 13 along the line 33 by a guillotine (not shown) and is picked up by an arm 31 and is then carried stepwise to stations 32d and 32e where the label is applied to the article by a downward movement of the pad.
