Abstract

1,228,479. Anaerobic polymerization. BORDEN CHEMICAL CO. (U.K.) Ltd. 15 Sept., 1969 [27 Sept., 1968], No. 46139/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division F2] Anaerobic polymerization e.g. between two surfaces which are being adhered together, is brought about by bringing two compositions, both of which are stable in the presence of air, the first composition containing a major proportion of an anaerobically curing monomer and a minor proportion of a first accelerator moiety (defined) and the second composition containing a similar monomer and a second accelerator moiety complementary to the first (defined), so that when both compositions are brought together in the absence of air, polymerization occurs. Preferred monomers are those having the formulµ where R is H, -CH 3 , -C 2 H 5 , -CH 2 OH or R<SP>1</SP> is -H, -Cl, -CH 3 or -C 2 H 5 ; R<SP>11</SP> is H, -OH or x and y are each integers equal to at least 1 and n is 0 or 1; where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>, n and y are as above, x<SP>1</SP> is 0 or an integer, z is 1, 2, 3 or 4 and Q is an organic radical with a valency of z; where R<SP>1</SP> is as above, and R<SP>111</SP> is -H, -CH 3 or -C 2 H 5 . The first accelerator is preferably an amine such as N,N - dimethyl - p - toluidene with, or replaced by, N,N - dimethyl aniline, N,N- diethylaniline, N,N - di - # - hydroxyethylaniline, N,N - dimethyl - m - toluidene, N,N- dimethyl - p - anisidine, triethylamine, trin - butylamine or 2 - diethylaminoethanol. The second accelerator is preferably a sulphimide such as saccharin (2,3 - benzisothiazolinone- 1,1 - dioxide), but this can be replaced by or used with a hydroperoxide such as cumene hydroperoxide or a peroxide such as 2,5 - dimethyl- 2,5 - di(tertiary butyl peroxy) hexane, or benzoic acid, or phenoxyacetic acid, dichloroacetic acid or trichloroacetic acid. Examples 1- 13 describe the use of the monomers, tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, the monoacrylate ester of dimethyleneglycol monomethylether, hexamethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, pentaerythrityl tetrakis (dimethylene glycol acrylate), and a mixture of tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate and N-methyl methacrylamide, with some of the above accelerator moieties.
