Polymer coatings are applied to the surface of articles by heating a polymer to a temperature in excess of its melting point and spraying the polymer melt by a pressurised gas through an atomizer onto the surface, the jet of polymer melt issuing from the atomiser being heated prior to contact with the surface. The surface being coated may be pre-heated. The articles may be made of concrete, cement mortar, wood, cardboard. In the examples: a polyamide coating is applied onto sand-blasted, pre-heated steel surfaces or cement plastering; polyethylene is applied to a pre-heated asbestos cement surface.
