Abstract

1,150,767. Glass coated articles. A. O. SMITH CORP. 22 July, 1966 [22 July, 1965], No. 33143/66. Heading C1M. A method of fabricating a glass coated, corrosion resistant metal article, comprising melting a corrosion resistant metal, atomizing the melted metal, spraying the atomized metal on to at least a portion of the surface of a carbon steel article, applying a coating of glass over the said undercoating and firing the coated article at a temperature above the softening temperature of the glass and below the melting point of the metal, said glass melting at the firing temperature to fill in the pores in said porous undercoating and provide an impermeable corrosion resistant coating. The corrosion resistant metal may be applied on the end surface and on the edge of the article and the glass coating then applied over the article as a whole. In another embodiment a finely-divided substance such as powdered glass with or without a refractory material is added to the corrosion resistant metal powder and the mixture is sprayed on to the end surface and edge of the said article, followed by spraying with the glass and firing. A coating of vitreous enamel may be applied over the glass-metal coating before firing. Any conventional glass composition may be used and examples are given. Refractory materials mentioned include oxides, nitrides, silicides, and borides of aluminium, titanium, zirconium, silicon, tantalum, chromium and nickel. Corrosion resistant metals can be any metal or alloy resistant to the particular corrosive material to which the article is exposed.
