Abstract
513,451. Vitreous enamelling. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. April 11, 1938, Nos. 11052, 11053 and 11054. Convention dates, April 22, 1937, May 3, 1937, and May 3, 1937. [Class 56] A process for enamelling metal consists in first coating the surface of the metal with a porous intermediate layer which is capable of uniting with the enamel when the latter is fired, and then depositing on the surface through the porous layer a metal which roughens the metal to be enamelled. When enamelling iron, the metal may be cleaned and freed from oxides either mechanically or by pickling, and is then coated with the porous layer. This may be a fritted material consisting of silica with alkalies, boric acid, lime, and alumina; or it may be a non-fritted material composed of a self-hardening layer of frit containing waterglass with any usual inorganic or organic binding-agent if required. The roughening metal, which may be iron or nickel, is then deposited through the porous layer either by spraying, or by the decomposition of a liquid or gaseous metal compound such as a carbonyl, or electrolytically. Finally, the enamel is applied and fired.
