Animal stunning apparatus comprises a pair of electrodes 20, 21 for application to the head and back of an animal, a normally inoperative voltage source 40, variable between a tranquilising voltage and a stunning voltage, and a motor 9 driving a conveyer (1) for delivering animals to the applicator 14 prior to bleeding. With the switch 39 in the closed position the motor 9 is in operation while the switch 68 is open and the voltage source 40 is inoperative. As the animal approaches the end (5) of the conveyer (1) the operator momentarily closes push button 22 operating the steprelay 77 which opens switch 39 and closes switch 68. Thus the conveyer is stopped and the autotransformer 41 is energized. The operator applies the applicator 14 to the animal which receives a 50 volt tranquilising voltage via the isolating transformer 42 and the adjustable autotransformer 43. When switch 23 is momentarily closed the relay 135 is activated closing switches 131 and 134 and opening 132 and 133. The switch 134 completes a holding circuit to maintain the relay in this position. The switch 131 actuates, via switch 110, a reversible motor 100, which, during one and half seconds advances the slider 64 to the 170 volt position and, via the shaft 102, rotates the cams 103-106 clockwise through 180 degrees to the position of Figs. 5-5a (not shown). The consequent opening of switch 110 stops motor 100, the closing of switch 107 actuates a timer motor 123. After half a second, switch 121 is momentarily opened, de-activating the relay 135 which breaks the circuit to the timer motor 123 and actuates the motor 100 in the opposite direction, via switches 132 and 113, hence reducing the output voltage and rotating the cams to their original position. During this the relay 77 is re-activated, via switch 116, cutting off the voltage supply and re-starting the conveyer motor 9 for supplying the next animal.
