Abstract

1,227,112. Timing ignition. S. R. FINCH. Jan.29, 1969 [Feb. 12, 1968], No.5043/69. Heading F1B. An internal-combustion engine ignition timing system comprises (a) a transmission shaft connected to the crank-shaft (not shown) for transmission of torque the transmission shaft being flexible in torsion (b) non-rotating pulse generating assemblies 10,11 (c)rotatable pulse generating means (not shown) connected to rotate with the transmission shaft for co-operation with the non-rotating assemblies for generating spaced electrical pulses the rotatable pulse generating means being at least in part connected to a portion of the transmission shaft remote from the crank-shaft whereby the timing of at least some of the pulses generated thereby is dependent on torsional flexure of the transmission shaft and hence on the torque transmitted thereby, (d) means connected to receive at least some of the pulses for generating a first signal representative of the speed of rotation of the transmission shaft. (e) means for detecting the timing relationship between the torque dependent pulses and a crank-shaft datum time for generating a second signal the crank-shaft timing of which relative to the datum time is representative of the torque transmitted by the transmission shaft (f) and time delay means 23, 24 connected to ignition means 5 for controlling energization thereof at a selected time in relation to rotation of the crank-shaft, the time delay means being connected to receive the first signal and the second signal for advancing the selected time in response to a variation of the first signal indicative of an increased speed of rotation of the transmission shaft and for retarding the selected time in response to retardation of the second signal indicative of an increased torque transmitted by the transmission shaft.
