Abstract

1,187,589. Teleprinters. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 17 Aug., 1967 [6 Oct., 1966], No. 44777/66. Heading B6F. In a teleprinter wherein characters on a continuously-rotating wheel 1 are struck by a hammer 6 the operation of which is synchronized by signals from a signal generator 8, 9 the rotating part 9 of which is driven by the same motor 4 that drives the wheel 1, means responsive to variations in the rotational speed of wheel 1 are provided to vary the times of firing of the hammer to compensate for incorrect timing of the hammer firing due to such variations of speed. As shown, the signal generator comprises a phonic wheel 9 driven from the shaft 3 of the wheel 1, and a pick-up 8, the latter applying synchronizing signals to a hammer-firing control circuit 7. The drive to the wheel 9 comprises a member 14 fixed to the shaft 3 and having two weights 11, 12 pivoted thereto at opposite ends 13 and urged together at the ends by springs 18. Pins 15 on the weights engage slots 16 in the wheel 9. At normal speed of rotation, the wheel 9 is in an intermediate position in its range of permissible movement relative to member 14 and wheel 1 but if the motor speed varies, the centrifugal action of the weights causes the wheel 9 to be retarded or advanced to provide the timing compensation referred to. The centrifugal device may be employed to advance or retard the pick-up 8 instead of the wheel 9.
