Abstract

1,226,826. Fuel elements. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 1 Aug., 1968 [2 Aug., 1967], No. 36715/68. Heading G6C. In a steam cooled, fast nuclear reactor, fuel rods are supported in an enclosing, open-ended channel and are urged into engagement with each other by a radial thrust supplied by the coolant stream. The fuel rods 5 are supported in the tube 1 by the thin, elastically yielding, pressure-plates 10 and are spaced apart by the helically wound wires 8. Cooling steam flows longitudinally along the rods in channel 14 and between the plates 10 and the tube 1 in the outer channel 15. Throttling of the coolant streams occurs in both channels 14, 15 but the channel 15 pressure is higher than that in 14 and urges plate 10 against the fuel bundle to compress the latter. Control of throttling in channels 15 is effected by means of ridges fixed transversely across the channel.
