Abstract
1,226,601. Road surface marking; paint spraying. R. MAS. 8 Jan., 1968 [9 Jan., 1967], No. 1007/68. Headings B2E and B2F. [Also in Division El] In a line-marking vehicle, radiation-curable paint from a container 30 is sprayed on a road surface - e.g. by a dispersing foil 26 - and is then cured by a beam of ionizing radiation either from a shutter-controlled shielded gamma ray source 36 (e.g. cobalt 60) or from an electron beam generator on the vehicle. The vehicle may also be provided with a road-cleaning brush 49, a road-drying air jet 44, and a pre-curing hot-air jet 50. The road wheels may be driven by electric motors powered by an engine-driven generator 11. In the paint-spraying assembly, Fig. 4, nozzle 24 having an air inlet 20 contains a dispersing foil 26 having a triangular recess 32 receiving paint from twin paint inlets 28. The apparatus is controlled from an operator's seat 16 below the driver's seat. The control circuit, Fig. 3, (not shown) includes a valve (34) shutting off the paint supply, a valve (22) for adjusting the compressed air supply for inlet 20, and electric heaters and control valves for the road-drying and pre-curing nozzles. The paint may incorporate reflective glass powder and may comprise a solution of ethylenically unsaturated polymers (particularly acrylic and epoxy-acrylic resins and polyesters) in a liquid monomer, the mixture being stored with a polymerization inhibitor in the container 30. In a modification the mixing takes place in the nozzle 24, the monomer being supplied to the recess 32 while the polymer is delivered to a horizontal slot in the foil. The shield 36 has a horizontally-displaceable shutter and a lead-rubber skirt, and may be of sufficient width for irradiation of two parallel marking lines from two spraying assemblies.
