A composition for use in washing stains from fabrics comprises an enzyme and a material which supplies a percarboxylic acid or salt thereof when the composition is added to the wash water. This material may comprise a persalt and an activator therefor. A suitable persalt is a perborate such as sodium perborate whilst the activators include carboxylic esters and anhydrides and carboxylic acyl amides, e.g. N-acetyl succinimide, trisacetyl cyanurate, phenyl acetate, N-benzoyl glutarimide, N-pchlorobenzoyl-5,5-dimethyl hydantoin, cyclic and aliphatic imides, e.g. N-methoxycarbonyl phthalimide, 1,3 - di - (N - methoxycarbonyl)- hydantoin, compounds of the general Formula (I): where X is halogen and Z represents the atoms necessary to complete a hydantoin or succinimide ring, e.g. N-m-chlorobenzylsuccinimide, N-sulphonated cyclic imides, e.g. N-benzenesulphonyl phthalimide or an alkyl or aryl chloroformate. Alternatively, a solid percarboxylic acid or a salt of such an acid may be used, e.g. peroxybenzoic acids, particularly those having chloro or nitro substituents such as m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid and 2,4-dichloroperoxybenzoic acid. These acids may be protected against deterioration on storage by pelletizing them, preferably with a coating or agglomerating agent such as paraffin wax. The enzyme may be a proteolytic enzyme, e.g. pepsin, keratinase, metalloproteases. Other enzymes employed are amylases, carbohydrases or lipases. The enzyme preparation may be in the form of a powder or as spray-dried granules, and may contain calcium sulphate as a diluent. The percompound is preferably present in an amount such that it provides a concentration of percompound in the wash water equivalent to 1- 40 p.p.m. of available oxygen. A preferred detergent formulation containing sodium perborate tetrahydrate to be used at 0À15% concentration in the wash water contains 5-15% of that compound, corresponding to 8-20 p.p.m. of available oxygen. Typically the enzyme is present in an amount 0À001-4% of the total detergent formulation. The enzyme composition may be used in water as a pre-rinse or mixed into a surface-active detergent composition. The conventional anionic, cationic and non- ionic surface-active agents may be employed. The detergent may also contain inorganic builder salts, sequestering agents, polymeric additives, e.g. CMC and PVA, optical brighteners, e.g. stilbene derivatives and phenolic antioxidants.
