Abstract

1,225,957. Rolling gear teeth. F. F. ERDELYI. 29 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 5025/69. Heading B3M. The teeth of a gear-wheel are provided with a crowned profile by rolling the gear-wheel in contact with a toothed roll, a relative tumbling motion being provided between the gear-wheel and tool. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a gearwheel 1 to be crowned is pressed by an hydraulically-operated plunger 11 against a toothed master gear 8 and is rolled by surrounding rolls 2. The gear 8 is driven and serves to drive the meshing rolls 2, the gear-wheel 1 being moved axially relative to the rolls. The rolls 2 are carried on eccentric shafts 17 and can be radially adjusted by toothed sectors 26 coupled to the shafts. Rotation of a ring gear 25 leads to rotation of the sectors and of the shafts 17, with consequent adjustment of the rolls. The plunger 11 includes a support rod 15 whose axis performs a wobbling motion by following the surface of the cone. The gear-wheel 1 therefore performs a wobbling motion relative to the tools. The tools themselves can be arranged to wobble about their axis of rotation using individual drives for them. By wobbling the plunger and gear-wheel in a single plane, rather than in a conical path, either radial or axial crowning can be produced. An alternative mounting for a gear-wheel 1, Fig. 3a, consists of eccentrics 53, 53a, whose speed of rotation is different from that of the gear wheel due to its contact with the tools 2. Control of the form of crowning is possible by adjustment of the wobbling motion both of the gear-wheel and of the tools 2 about a centre 7. The rolling operation may form teeth completely on a gear-wheel blank, but it is preferred that the teeth are performed by milling, planing or grinding and are subsequently crowned by cold-rolling.
