Abstract
1,225,905. Welding by pressure; ceramic to metal seals. PHILIPS ELECTRONICS & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 28967/69. Headings B3R and B3V. [Also in Divisions C1 and H1] An air-tight seal is established between a ceramic or metal (e.g. constantan) wall and a beryllium window 4 which closes an opening 1 in the wall, by applying and attaching an intermediate substance 5 to a supporting face 3 of the wall and sandwiching the substance between window and wall, and then causing the substance to diffuse into the beryllium by heating to a temperature below that at which the said substance melts, preferably while applying pressure P from a ring 7. The intermediate substance is Cu, Ag or Au. The attachment of intermediate substance may be by melting by high-frequency heating, after which the layer is ground to about 1 mm. thickness. The second heating may be to above 700‹ C. if silver is used. The window 4 may be flat, or its inner surface may be concave or convex. The window may be used in an X-ray tube or radiation detector.
