Abstract

1,225,011. 2,2-Di(hydroxymethyl) alkyl phosphites and derivatives thereof. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 March, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12563/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Compounds of formula (RO)P(OH) 2 where R is a 2,2-di(hydroxymethyl) alkyl group or acyl derivative thereof, which group may contain a second phosphorous acid monoester group, are prepared by one of the following methods: (a) reaction of a 2,2-di(hydroxymethyl) alcohol or appropriate derivative thereof with PCl 3 to give a dichlorophosphite which is then hydrolysed to the monoester, (b) hydrolysis of a bicyclic 1,1,1-trimethylol-alkane phosphite or (c) hydrolysis of a monocyclic hydroxymethyl-dimethylolalkane phosphite. Specified compounds are 2,2-di(hydroxymethyl) butyl phosphite and the bis-phosphorous acid esters of pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol. The compounds are used as stabilizers for polymers.
