1,224,968. Brakes for shopping carts &c. F. SIEGEL, and J. SIEGEL. 11 Nov., 1969, No. 55142/69. Heading F2E. A blocking device for use on shopping carts or other wheel-mounted conveyances intended to be moved along and to rest on floors having parallel ribs 17 alternating with grooves 117 of predetermined width and depth, comprises a support 6 mounted on the conveyance and carrying a wheel 13 capable of reciprocating relative to the support, at least one shoe 15 carried by the support and having a braking surface spaced from the lowermost point of the wheel, and biasing means for urging the shoe and wheel downwards whereby the shoe and wheel can engage a rib 17 which is adjacent to the groove into which the wheel extends when the conveyance rests on a groove floor. As shown, a plunger 8 loaded by a spring 9 is reciprocable and turnable in a cylinder 7 as determined by vertical slots in the cylinder and a pin 10 in the plunger, the cylinder being welded or clamped to the frame 3a of the conveyance; the wheel 13 or axle 14 thereof are movable axially relative to the shoes 15 and the latter engage in grooves 16 of the ribs 17. The cylinder 7 may be mounted for pivotal movement normal to longitudinal direction of the frame member 3a and biased by leaf springs to assume a vertical position.
