Abstract

1467139 Brakes FLEXELLO CASTORS & WHEELS Ltd 31 Dec 1973 [24 Oct 1972 18 June 1973] 49049/72 and 28779/73 Heading F2E [Also in Division A4] A wheel 4, such as a castor, is braked by an eccentrically mounted spragging device engaging the peripheral surface of the wheel, the eccentricity being such that in one direction of wheel rotation the wheel is braked by the device. As shown, the device comprises a cylindrical roller 12 supported on an eccentric axle 7 positioned eccentrically within sleeves 9, each sleeve having an outer part 10 fitting in a bore 6 formed in a flange 5 projecting from a leg 2 of a fork, and an inner part 11 provided with a hexagonal outer surface whereby the axle 7 can be moved in a direction at right angles to its length for adjustment purposes. Frictional engagement between roller 12 and wheel 4 is provided by a knurled portion 13 on the roller. In a further embodiment the roller is mounted on a stirrup 34, Fig. 4, which is coupled to an actuating rod 35 whereby the roller may be moved clear of the wheel. In addition a braking bar 33 is mounted between the downwardly disposed apices of a pair of triangular parts 30 the roller being mounted between the upwardly disposed apices. The braking bar 33 is caused to brake the wheel upon upward movement of the rod 35 causing pivotal movement of parts 30. Free rotation of the wheel is permitted by downward depression of the rod so that both bar 33 and roller 32 are clear of the wheel. The latter embodiment may be used in luggage trolleys, whereas the former may be used in dragline conveyer systems employing castorized trucks.
