1428163 Braking of hand-propelled vehicles A MANSS 15 March 1973 [25 March 1972] 12604/73 Heading F2E A luggage truck has a tubular pushing frame (1), 6 inside which extend vertical brake rods 5 carrying brake shoes 9 actuatable on wheels 8 to brake the truck and hold it stationary, the rods 5 being arranged to extend substantially perpendicularly to the axis of rotation of the wheels. As shown, the wheel 8 has a trapezoidal profile with a contact surface 12 and oblique edge strips 11, and the brake shoe 9 also has a trapezoidal shape. Advantageously the angle (α) between surface 12 and strips (11) of wheel 8 is a little larger than the angle (α<SP>1</SP>) between base and side of brake shoe 9 so that on setting down the shoe 9 on the wheel 8 by vertical movement of rod 5 the shoe is pulled by continuing movement of the wheel from linear contact to areal contact to amplify the braking effect, the brake profile having a certain elasticity. A weak spring may aid brake application. In another embodiment the shoe engages from one side at the edge surface of the wheel, the brake shoe having a smaller angle with respect to the wheel plane than the wheel surface. In another embodiment the brake shoe has an arcuate profile of smaller radius than the wheel profile.
