For braking the rolling and swivelling movement of a castor wheel 14, Fig. 2, the wheel is mounted between legs 11 on an annular plate 10 held between balls 9 of two ball races 5, 6, to rotate about vertical shaft 1. The brake comprises a leaf spring 15 fixed at one end from the plate 10 and pivotally mounted on pin 22 at the other end between side flanges 20 of the first control pedal 19. When the pedal is depressed nose 23 runs up the inclined lower surfaces 37 of two vertical flanges of a braking member 25. The member 25 is mounted on the underside of a U-shaped plate 24, pivoted on pin 17 between the legs 11, and on which the second control pedal 39 is pivotally mounted on pin 44. A screw 38 is provided in the braking member 25 whose end contacts the upper ball race 5 when the pedal 19 is depressed. When the brake is operated movement of the nose 23 of the pedal 19 up the surface 37 forces the leaf spring 15 into engagement with the wheel surface, Fig. 3 (not shown) and also pivots plate 24 upwards until the end of the screw contacts the upper ball thereby preventing both rolling and swivelling movement of the castor wheel. To disengage the brake the pedal 39 is depressed, so that nose portions 41 on side flanges of the pedal 39 force the nose 23 on the pedal 19 down the surface 37.
