Abstract

1,132,877. Cycle &c. vehicles. E. QUEDREUX. 15 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No. 16626/66. Heading B7E. A motor or pedal-driven vehicle is illustrated in its pedal drive version and comprises two coaxial wheels 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, substantially circular and cross-connected tubular frames 7, 7<SP>1</SP> also supporting parts 7<SP>4</SP> and 7<SP>5</SP> mounting castor wheels or skids 9, grooved rollers 13 in pairs engaging the wheels 14 and supporting the weight of the frames 7 and the load, and a chain and pedal wheel drive rotating roughened grooved rollers 15 also engaging the wheels 14 but movable and guided in slots against springs (21), Fig. 3 (not shown), to a non-drive position out of engagement with the wheels. When the driver turns the pedals in the direction a the rollers 15 tend to climb up the inner periphery of the wheel and move the centre of gravity G of the driver &c. forwardly of the centre C of the wheels 14. This produces instability in the vehicle and the wheels 14 rotate also in the direction a to move the driver forwardly and return the point G to lie beneath C. By turning a wheel 34 the vehicle may be steered by differentially applying or releasing cable-operated caliper brakes on each wheel 14, see also Figs. 4-6 (not shown). The steering column which is hinged at 31 to the main frame may be pivoted downwardly to pull on the brake cables and apply both brakes simultaneously, and in this position also lift the rollers 15 away from the wheels 14.
