Abstract

1497546 Wheeled footwear device G CAMPBELL 9 May 1975 [9 May 1974] 20474/74 Heading A6D A wheeled footwear device comprises a supporting member 4 comprising a block 5, a platform 6 which may be attached to or incorporated in a shoe or boot and axle carriers 7 and 8 which carry axles 9 and 10. cylindrical members (wheels or rollers) 2 and 3 partly located in recesses in the supporting member 4 and braking elements, such as balls 13 situated in gaps 14 between the circumferential surfaces of the cylindrical members and the confronting surfaces of the recesses. the braking elements being so dimensioned that they wedge in the gaps to prevent rotation of the cylindrical members 2 and 3 in the direction indicated by the arrows A, but are urged out of wedging engagement in the gaps when the cylindrical members are rotated in the opposite direction thus allowing further rotation in that direction. A manually operable lock is provided in the block 5 and comprises a metal disc or cylinder 18 mounted for rotation by a lever 20 about an eccentric pivot 19, between a position in which there is frictional engagement between the disc or cylinder 18 and member 3 and a position in which there is no contact therebetween. Strips 16 and 17 prevent water or dirt from entering openings 11 and 12. In a further embodiment (Figures 3 and 4 not shown) a wheeled footwear device is provided with four cylindrical members each having respective braking elements located in gaps defined by the circumferential surfaces of the cylindrical members and the confronting surfaces of inserts located in openings in the supporting member. There may be only one braking element associated with each cylindrical member of which there may be one or more and the braking element or elements may each comprise a roller or wedge shaped member which may be urged into its respective gap by a spring.
