Abstract

1,224,846. Electric timepieces. TIMEX CORP. July 31, 1969 [July 31, 1968; June 12, 1969], No.38560/69. Heading G3T. A timepiece comprises a case 10, a time base 17, an electronic circuit 16, a dial plate 13, a crystal 12 and a time display including an electrooptical material in the form of a liquid crystal or a ferro-electric ceramic. A battery 14 is connected to the time base 17 which is preferably a piezo-electric crystal, the oscillation frequency of which is stepped down by fifteen binary divider circuits, three of which 18-20 are shown, to provide an output of one pulse per second. The dial plate, which is electrically conductive, is connected to a terminal of the battery and sixty radial lines 24 of conductive, transparent material such as tin oxide are printed on the inner surface of the crystal 12. A liquid crystal such as 6-methoxy-2-napthoic acid which is normally clear but which scatters light in the presence of an electric field fills the space between the crystal and the dial plate. Voltages applied at successive second intervals to the lines 24 therefore provide a seconds indication for the timpiece. A second series of sixty conductive lines each in the form of the segments separated by a non- conducting gap provide a minute hand indication 31 when voltages are applied to both segments and an hour hand indication 32 when a voltage is applied to only one segment. Instead of changing from being a clear to a light scattering material the liquid crystal may change colour. In a modification the conductive lines are replaced by three rings each of which is formed by sixty segments of transparent conductive material. A watch is also described in which a series of sixty radial lines provide the seconds and minutes indication whilst a series of twenty four shorter radial lines provide half-hourly indications. A watch using a ferro-electric material such as a solid solution of lead zirconate, lead titanate and bismuth oxide which is pressed and heated is described. Regions of the material become transparent in the presence of an electric field to provide the time indication. A logic circuit and the inter-connections between groups of the radial lines to ensure the correct sequential operation of the time indication are described.
