Abstract

1285107 Electronic watches MANUFACTURE DES MONTRES ROLEX S A 20 Oct 1970 [21 Oct 1969] 49705/70 Heading G3T A battery powered electronic timepiece comprises a digital display panel of electroluminescent elements which are selectively energized by current pulses from integrated circuit logic units and frequency dividers fixed on the rear of the panel, the pulses being derived from a time base including a quartz crystal oscillator or tuning fork. The display panel may indicate hours, mins, secs in a 12 hour or 24 hour cycle system, also the date. The panel is arranged to be readily detachable from the timepiece case and from the time base and power source. The elements 14 may be arranged as shown, Fig. 1, and may be electroluminescent diodes each diode having a terminal pin 15 connected respectively by wires 29, Fig.2, to frequency dividers in an integrated circuit 29, and being embedded in insulating material 33. The other terminal of each diode element contacts a conductive layer on the rear surface of a transparent plate 31 and connecting the other terminals to a pin 16. The pin 16 engages a socket in the timepiece casing and connected to the time base oscillator. Two other pins (not shown) connect the panel to the battery. There may be nine integrated circuits as circuit 28, a respective one to each time display cell 1 to 6 and a respective one to each pair of date indice cells 9-10, 7-8, 11-12. The display cells may alternatively comprise an active medium between the transparent conductive plate and the cell bottom and insulated from elements 14 which may be aluminium. The active medium may be a liquid of crystalline structure which is normally transparent and becomes opaque in an electric field or it may be a solid layer with a phosphorous base, the field being produced by a current pulse between the respective element 14 and conductive plate. As further alternatives each display cell may comprise a matrix of diodes, as illustrated, Fig. 3 (not shown), or a matrix of luminescent-gas tubes.
