Abstract
1,224,712. Vehicle headlamps. DUCELLIER ET CIE. 10 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 18347/69. Heading F4R. In a temperature compensated headlamp adjusting system for a motor vehicle comprising control devices 4 which adjust the headlamps P in accordance with an input gas pressure derived from vehicle attitude sensing devices 3, the input gas pressure acts on a piston 20 working against an opposed resilient gas-filled cushion 19, which forms part of the control device, to adjust the lamps. Thus, as changes in gas pressure in the system and in the resilient cushion, due to temperature changes, are equal and act on the piston in opposition they cancel one another's effect and provide temperature compensation. Each gas-filled cushion 19 may be of toroidal form, the piston having an annular projection to co-operate with it. The front face of the piston contacts a membrane 15 which forms one wall of a variable volume chamber 16 connected via pipe 6 to the attitude sensing devices at the front and rear axles. The gas-filled cushions are connected together via pipes 18a and reservoir 35. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, not shown, the gas-filled cushions are each in the form of a truncated cone, the smaller diameter wall being attached directly to the piston, and the other wall, through which the piston-rod passes, being retained by a metal plate having a central aperture to allow the passage of the piston-rod to the lamp. In a further embodiment of the system, the variable volume chamber 16 is connected to the sensing device at the back axle and the gas-filled cushion. 19 is connected to the front axle sensing device. Initial adjustments of the lamps are made manually by rotating the piston-rods 21 which are threaded to screw into the lamp 24.
