Abstract

Junction boxes. - Relates to stuffing-boxes for the passage of a number of electric cables &c. through bulkheads, decks, &c., and to compositions for filling them. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the box is flanged at a<1> and is secured to the bulkhead D by a nut B, a packing-washer C being interposed to make a water-tight joint. The box is screwed internally to receive two screwed glands F which press inwards a pair of perforated plates E through which the cables pass. The space between these plates is filled with a composition which does not set hard and does not crack. Such a composition is a mixture of an elastic mineral pitch, the material known as mineral rubber, and a hydrocarbon oil to which is added 60 per cent by weight of shredded asbestos, talc, silicate cotton, or some organic fibrous material to act as an absorbent. Certain vegetable products such as ground palm kernels may be used as a filling. When the cables pass through a deck, a pipe is used as is customary and a stuffing-box as described above is placed on the upper end of the pipe. In a modified form of box, a testing space is provided in the centre to which pressure can be applied and thence transmitted to the packing.
