Abstract
11,647. Soliani, N. May 17. Warships; bulkheads; decks; magazines.-In warships, the longitudinal bulkheads and bottom platforms, used to protect the vital parts, are corrugated, and their overlapping ends supported by stiffeners, means being provided for keeping the riveted joints water-tight when strained by submarine explosions. As shown in horizontal section in Fig. 2, the protective bulkhead A, also shown with the platform B in Fig. 1, comprises a number of strong steel corrugated plates. The overlapping portions are riveted together and strengthened by stiffeners C. Outside the steel plating is a wood lining D, and, encasing this lining, are layers of canvas treated with white or red lead or sheets of felt or india-rubber held in place by a lining of zinc or galvanized steel secured to the wood lining. The space between the bulkhead and inner skin G may be filled with coal and flooded with water. In Fig. 3, the protective deck J is sloped at J<1> and meets the bulkhead A, which is curved so as to be continuous with the platform B. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, a space is left between the corrugated plate A and the flat plate A<2>, the space A<3> being filled with pitch, resin, tallow, congealed oils, or a plastic composition. Congealed oils &c. may fill the space H existing between the platform and the inner skin G. The congealed oils are useful for preventing leakage around magazines which require to be kept cool, and may form a reserve of liquid fuel, if required.
