Sheathing; sinking, preventing; hulls.-Vessels are constructed of hollow seamless tubing 1, Fig. 1, of triangular cross-section with rounded edges. The tubes, which are brazed together, are either placed longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 2, or transversely, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. When the tubes are large, the joints are protected by smaller tubes 3, Fig. 3, and the hull may be sheathed with iron bands 4, Fig. 4. For large ships, two sets of tubes are employed, the inner set 9, Fig. 5, being double the breadth of the outer set 8. Water-tight compartments 10 are formed in the tubes 1 by pieces of cork or other material. When the tubes are placed transversely, the ends 13 are bevelled, as shown in Fig. 6. A boat may be built of planks of the section shown in Fig. 8, laid upon an inner lining of metal tubes as described above, no other internal framing being necessary.
