Abstract

1,224,310. Vehicle fuel tanks. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 2 Oct., 1969 [2 Oct., 1968], No. 48409/69. Heading B7H. [Also in Division G1] A motor vehicle fuel tank includes a movable buoyant baffle 26 (Fig. 2), capable of being freely supported on the surface of fuel to separate the tank into two portions, the baffle having round its perimeter a discontinuous seal 34 whereby the portions are interconnected. The baffle is intended to reduce the area of airfuel surface in the tank, and is said to reduce fuel surge. The tank is fillable from the bottom by a filler 30. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5) the baffle 26<SP>1</SP> has a lower deflector edge 42 and a central vent passage 44 through which a baffle guide member 46 passes. The guide member may be a resistance wire element contacted by a slider 48 on the baffle to form part of a fuel-gauge.
