Abstract

1,223,552. Polymerizable composition. BALM PAINTS Ltd. 27 March, 1968 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 57976/66. Addition to 1,137,129. Heading C3P. A composition free from addition polymerization initiator comprises a dispersion of filmforming polymer in an aqueous liquid, an autoxidizable material which is a polyether or a homo- or copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone, and in the presence of oxygen provides radicals to initiate addition polymerization, and a non- autoxidizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is readily homopolymerizable by such radicals. The autoxidizable material e.g. a polyalkylene oxide, polyvinyl ether or vinyl pyrrolidone-vinyl butyl ether copolymer is preferably a thickener for the aqueous liquid. In the examples, vinyl toluene is gradually added to an aqueous latex of a methyl methacrylate/ 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer containing polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, or an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer which may have been reacted with toluene diisocyanate. The latex is then aged prior to addition thereto of an organic cobalt salt, the resulting dispersion being cast on glass and dried.
