Abstract

1,221,990. Dual hydraulic brake systems; safety and warning devices. KELSEY-HAYES CO. 19 Aug., 1968 [17 Aug., 1967], No. 39636/68. Heading F2E. A dual hydraulic vehicular brake system 40, 20, 18 and 42, 36 has a separate hydraulic supply for each system (e.g. from master cylinder 22), a proportioning valve 88 for reducing the pressure to one system under selected conditions, and a device 44 comprising means for by-passing the proportioning valve in response to failure of the other system, and for providing a warning indication in response to failure of either brake system. As shown, a valve 72 slidable in a valve body 46 is provided with appropriate lands and seals to enable the proportioning valve 88 to be bypassed through bores 66, 51 and 74 when loss of pressure in the front-brake system due to failure therein results in the valve being moved (by rear brake hydraulic pressure), to the right. At the same time, ball 116 is depressed by land 91 to close the circuit of a warning lamp L. If the rear brake system fails, the valve is moved to the left, whereupon land 87 serves to switch on the lamp L.
