Abstract

1,221,779. Casting composite battery-plate connectors. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 5 April, 1968 [6 April, 1967], No. 15845/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H1] In a lead-acid electric storage battery, a plate strap 25, Fig. 3, is cast in a recess 12 or 14, Fig. 1, in the upper part 11 of the wall of the battery container 10 by pouring molten Pb into the recess when lugs 21 of plates 20 to be joined have been inserted through grooves 15 into the recess. Each recess 12, 14 has the grooves 15 formed in its inner wall and the latter may be a separate masking strip (40) with slits so that it can be threaded over the plate lugs 21; it may be a steel comb (50) to be removed after casting. The straps 25 cast in longer recesses 12 are also intercell connectors while those in short end recesses 14 are cast using a temporary mould (27) to form a reduced top 28, Fig. 5, for a terminal connection. A lid 30 of the battery has terminal posts 31, Fig. 3, each with a connector portion 32 with a notched or slotted end over (or interdigitating with a notched end of) an end strap top 28 in a recess 14 when the lid is in position. Pb is poured through an opening 33 in the lid to unite the plate strap and connector, after which the opening 33 is filled with an epoxy resin or other cement 34. When the inner wall of a recess 12 is temporary, i.e. when steel combs (50) are used, the edges of the latter are formed to receive the broadened end of an intercell partition (51), Fig. 7 (not shown), but leaving a gap to form a fillet (56) of Pb for sealing the partition. The edge of the intercell partition may be grooved or corrugated so that sealing ribs are formed when the intercell connector is cast. The plate lugs 21 may extend horizontally from the sides of the plates 20 where the acid can extend above the grooves 15.
