Abstract

1484135 Manufacture of iritercell connections in batteries OLDHAM & SON Ltd 3 Oct 1974 [27 Nov 1973] 54988/73 Heading H1B [Also in Division B3] A multicell battery is characterized in that the plates of one polarity of one cell are connected to those of a different polarity in an adjacent cell by means of a cast connecting member which extends along the row of plate lugs in each cell and passes integrally through and fills an aperture in an otherwise closed intercell partition wall, and also by a method of making the intercell connectors wherein a mould is positioned adjacent each cell and a slotted wall of the mould is moved to form a trough in combination with the plate lugs projecting through the slots and with a further wall of the mould, one end of the trough communicating with the aperture in the intercell partition, and wherein molten lead or lead alloy is poured into the mould and passes through and fills the aperture in the partition wall, the slotted wall being moved away from the lugs and the mould removed from the cell when the metal has set. In a preferred embodiment the mould is adapted to cast all intercell connectors simultaneously and comprises an elongate body 11 and two comb-like portions 13 running along each side, these portions when closed as shown forming troughs 19 with the plate lugs and the walls of the body 11 into which the molten metal 20 is poured. The comb portions are then rotated away from the body 11 and the mould removed.
