Abstract

1,221,690. Controlling reactors. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. 22 Jan., 1970 [22 Oct., 1968], No. 50013/68. Heading G6C. A control rod suspension arrangement comprises an open-link chain 16 attached at its lower end 20 to a control rod 19, and passing up and around a motor-driven driving sprocket 14 and thence hanging down into a chain locker 10 on the floor of which the excess length of chain 16 is deposited. The extreme end 22 of the portion of the chain 16 in the locker 10 is attached to a spring buffer 21 comprising a plunger slidably mounted in guides in a surrounding cylinder and having a powerful compression spring acting downwardly on a head attached to the lower end of the plunger. The spring, which may be pre-compressed, surrounds the plunger in the cylinder and its upper end bears against an abutment shoulder in the top of the cylinder. The surplus chain 16 piles up on the floor of the locker 10 as the control rod is raised and is picked up cleanly from it as the control rod is lowered. Should a rapid emergency insertion of the control rod be required, a clutch (not shown) is released in the motor drive to the sprocket 14 to allow the latter to rotate freely so that the control rod will descend under gravity, pulling the chain 16 over the sprocket 14, until the control rod reaches its fully inserted position, at which stage the part of the chain approaching the sprocket 14 becomes taut and the buffer 21 cushions the shock to the control rod.
