Abstract

A hoist or lift mechanism comprising a vertically-movable, load carrying member (2); first support means (5) through which the load carrying member is suspended whilst being raised and lowered; second support means (16) that extends vertically along the path of movement of the load carrying member and; gripping means (17) that is mounted on the load carrying member so as to co-operate with the second support means (16) at any height. The gripping means (17) is biassed towards a gripping position in which it grips the second support means (16) to transfer the load of the load carrying member (2) to the second support means (16), and is movable to a released position in which it allows unhindered downwards movement of the load carrying member. An actuator (21) that is responsive to operation of the hoist or lift mechanism in raising and lowering the load carrying member controls the gripping means (17) so as to move it into its released position when the hoist or lift mechanism is operating to raise or lower the load carrying member. A sensor (22) that is responsive to tension in the first support means (5) controls the gripping means (17) so as to move it into its gripping position when the tension in the first support means fails, the action of the sensor (22) in moving the gripping means to the gripping position over-riding the action of the actuator (21) in moving the gripping means to the released position. <IMAGE>
