Abstract

1,221,320. Packaging. CARTONNAGES DU VAL DE SEINE. 6 Sept., 1968 [6 Sept., 1967; 23 Aug., 1968], No. 42504/68. Heading B8C. A package of grouped articles, e.g. cans, comprises a cardboard strip 1 folded about the grouped articles wherein interlocking edges having cut-away portions 10 engage so that parts 13 lie above parts 14 and are retained by, e.g. interlocking tongues 15 and slots 19, glue, self-adhesive material, thermal adhesive or staples. The package blank may be coated with polyethylene to facilitate heat sealing. Apertures in side wall panels 6 may be reduced in size so that for example only beaded rims of the cans project. The package is made by first feeding the cardboard strips 1 from a stack, e.g. by a suction cup, to a pair of parallel conveyer chains 22 having strip-engaging lugs 23. Cans 3 are fed from an inclined rollerway to a circular driving plate 24 and between guide bars 26 to a second rollerway 27 located above the chains 22. Two distributer wheels 28 have an adjustable number of can-engaging recesses 29 to feed the cans groupwise on to the strips 1. Full arcuate portions 30 of the wheels 28 correspond to intervals between successive packages. The strips 1 are folded up and then over the cans by ramps 35, 37 respectively. A fixed metal plate 38 having an end 39 folded back ensures that the parts 10, 13, 14 engage correctly. Idle rollers 41 press the strip side panels 6 whilst at the end a wheel 42 comprising, in the example where interlocking tongues and slots 15, 19 are used, two diametrically opposed smooth segments (68), Fig. 7 (not shown), corresponding to the package intervals, and a number of wedges 43 which force the tongues 15 into the slots 19. A pivoted roller (77) presses periodically against the parts 13, 14 to complete the overlapping. The wheel 42 may be totally smooth and have heating means if retaining means other than tongues and slots are used. The machine is adjustable to produce different sized packages. An adhesive applicator may be incorporated in the machine.
