[Also in Division C7] A scale-inhibiting composition suitable for use in processes for recovering fresh water by distillation at temperatures above 170‹ F. from water containing salt-scale forming substances comprises (a) 20-90% by weight of 16‹ BaumÚ agave juice, (b) a combined weight content of sodium pyrophosphate and E.D.T.A. of 10- 70%, the proportions of pyrophosphate to E.D.T.A. being 25-95% of the former to 75-5% of the latter and (c) 1-30 weight per cent of "heavy molecule" sodium silicate (calculated on a SiO 2 : Na 2 O ratio of 3: 22) and/or 1-25 weight per cent of sulphamic acid. The composition reduces salt-scale formation effectively when used in a concentration of at least 1 part by weight in 40,000 parts of water treated, which water may be sea-water, industrial effluent, or brackish water.
